Do It Yourself (DIY) Urbanism is about people’s perception and alteration of spaces to meet their needs.

<span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#222222">Simply taping the word “love” over a conventional “way” on a one way sign can alter the meaning of the sign entirely (1/11/11). This sign, on 47th and 19th, exemplifies how a single word can change a person’s entire outlook of a space/progression of space. Easy as it is to discern that the sign has been altered, it is the next step that changes the way people think about this ordinary sign they normally see all over the city. Do you trust the sign and proceed as usual? Or do you discount the signs reputability and proceed in another fashion with caution. A simple change in surface calls into question the validity of something normally taken for granted.

<span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#222222">The graffiti on the old TUBS building, at 50th and Roosevelt, expands further than the actual structure, marking the trees and mailbox on the street as well as the external utilities (1/11/11). The entire area has been transformed into a medium for graffiti artists. Here the change in surface is remarkable, the many layers of paint exhibit the personalities of numerous taggers. It is interesting to note that a sort of “critical mass” has been established here, where the surrounding buildings are left relatively “untarnished”, this is most likely due to a de jure ruling, labeling the TUBS building as set aside as a graffiti canvas.

<span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#222222">The negative spaces between the painted pipes and wheels at Gasworks Park transition from children’s play area during the day into makeshift bedrooms and safe storage areas for the homeless at night(1/18/11).

<span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#222222">

<span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#222222">

Aimee Rozierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09683509556127464885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7550645556887732968.post-57939950242767260942012-01-19T17:37:00.000-08:002012-01-19T17:39:05.185-08:00User Constructed Transportation Tools:An Emerging Ecosystem
Transportation is what allows urbanism to function and flourish. Without efficient and readily available transportation options, the critical mass of people and ideas that we call urbanism can not occur. The importance of movement of people and goods to planners and citizens alike can not be understated. Design is often centered around tenants of movement, resulting in much of the built environment that we are used to seeing today. With such recent focus on the re-emergence of the city core and its associated urbanity, it is interesting to view some of the things various “unofficial” groups have embarked upon to make movement that much easier.

With a goal to bring real-time transit information to the Puget Sound region, One Bus Away was created by Brian Ferris, a graduate student at the University of Washington. Put in his own words, “[I] developed this site after too many late nights in the rain, wondering if the 44 would ever come” (http://onebusaway.org/p/ContactUs.action). The application allows users to track where their buses are in real time at any stop in the region.

What originally began as a one man operation eventually garnered the attention of transit agencies around the Puget Sound who are now beginning to integrate the application into their own transit strategies. Simply put, the application showcases a non-institutional construction to improve the urban environment.

Maps have always been used to describe and visualize the built environment on a macro scale. The construction of maps is an important factor in conveying and circulating information to others. With Seattle’s extensive transit system, many have found official transit maps confusing, or at worst, utterly unreadable. Looking at the image below, it is a mess of lines with little to no contextual information on routes.

is an inevitable byproduct of urban living. Cycles ofconsumption and
production that take place in physically constrained locations (cities)
depend upon practically infinite access to resources produced
in geographically distant locations. “Since nearly all possessions end up
asgarbage, the trash universe as a topic is virtually infinite.” (Chase
54) Consequently, what urban consumers do with their trash has virtually
infinite implications for the spatial reality of a city. Garbage cans,
rubbish bins, dumpsters – whatever you call them, they are everywhere.
The receptacles for consumed articles are large and ubiquitous members of
the landscape. To some, these receptacles are present only on trash day,
when they must be hauled out to the curb for pick-up. For others they
are a livelihood, a source of food, or a canvas upon which to mark
territory or display art. The aesthetics and location of trash containers
(variations from the standard being the DIY Urbanism concept for trash)
also help determine the function and character of a space, as well as
marking what areas are publicor private. Our photos reveal the
additional (if they exist) functions of various trash bins, and the
impact of their presence on the character and use of that space.

Looking
for and appreciating the mundane or overlooked is what everyday urbanism
is all about. What do we want to ignore more than our own trash? Trash
as DIY urbanism can reveal opinions of how closely one should interact
with or acknowledge their waste. Giving trash bins an additional function
such as acting as a canvas for advertisement or personal expression
directs our attention toward them. Decorating the trash can,the dumpster,
and the alleyway (the realm of the trash receptacle) can be
a celebration of that lowly part of our consumptive process – waste – and
a direct acknowledgement of its importance.

Every Saturday a group of farmers comes to the University Heights parking lot to set up tents and sell what they have grown and produced. It is one of several year-round farmers’ markets in Seattle. As you will see, merchants turn out every week no matter what the weather is. We went on a slushy Saturday to see what was for sale. These farmers offered everything from fresh fruits and vegetables and meats to hot veggie quesadilla lunches and produced goods such as juice and cheese. Of course, as the farmers themselves drive to Seattle to set up shop, everything sold at the market is locally grown or produced.

Farmers markets are an interesting example of DIY urbanism because they unite urban with rural. In an era where people often purchase produce that is grown either across the country or in another continent, these markets allow urban residents access to relatively locally grown foods. In Seattle’s case, the farmers’ markets are certainly DIY urbanism, as they are set up and taken down all in the same day by the farmers themselves (perhaps an opposition to this can be seen in Los Angeles’ permanently constructed farmers market at The Grove). Without the farmers’ desire to sell their goods directly and without the demand from citizens, these markets would not otherwise be part of the urban scene.

By André Luiz Silva and Vagner Damasceno

Why do you chew a gum? Soldiers chewed gums to relax during the Second World War, some people
use it to clean their teeth when they are in a hurry, some people like it, just because it is sweet. However,
if you go to Post Alley in Seattle, you will find a different way to use a gum.

The Gum Wall began around 1993 when patrons started to stick gums in the wall while they were waiting
too much for a show at Market Theater. Theater company workers scraped the wall twice, but gave up
when it became a tourist attraction of Seattle, and in 2009 it was considered the second “germiest” tourist
attraction in the world.

The existence of the Gum Wall encourages other kinds of urban art, as posts, graffiti and sayings in the
rest of the alley. The fact is that as a kind of art expression, it changes itself with time, as well as, it is
changed by some individuals in their everyday life without any previous concept or idea. In addition, as an
urban intervention, it adds the alley’s wall some colors and texture, and also a distinct fruit aroma to the
surround area.

In our point of view, the Gum Wall is a good example of Do-It-Yourself, it’s a sample of how small actions
can be powerful and how they can increase an environment - nowadays the gum wall is part of a local
culture and it has been used as background for movies (Love Happens in 2009) and wedding photos.
The
inspiration on our Urban Landscape diary lead us to one of the most famous

how the ideas of urban planners and everyday citizens create several
contradictions but yet are able to coexist flawlessly.

We
started our day at 50th and 16th where we observed a
contraction between the placement of “The City” church and the “University
Lutheran Church”. Although the ideas these buildings represent contradict each
other, they still exist within the same block like many churches around the
community do. Churches are an example of urbanism because religion is given its
power through human involvement and community, thus giving these spaces
importance.

Another contradiction can be seen at the University cross walks because
of their coexistence between man and machinery. Crosswalks keep pedestrians and
automobiles in rapid motion in each other’s general vicinity but prevent
accidents from occurring. This is a form of urbanism because it allows urban
planners to construct simple pathways that both machine and man can understand
to control everyday traffic.

As
we rode the metro-bus we passed by street art that had been spray painted onto
a bridge, this is an example of coexistence between different forms of public
art. The refined art of creating a structure (like this bridge) combined with the
art of an ordinary graffiti artist creates an interesting artistic entity.
There is this 2 dimensional art working together in a 3 dimensional space; where
architects and an ordinary citizen work together to create public art.

A connection can be made bridging seafood caught in the wild to the seafood on
the stands at Pike Place market. This is an important form of urbanism because the
existence and success of the market relies on the human ability to produce and
sell goods that come from the environment.

We
concluded the day with our final contradiction between public and private
spaces. By looking at café’s and restaurants with apartment units above this
can easily be seen. By having these two things in one structure it is an
example of people merging their private space with public space. Developers
produce these spaces in their attempt to create a place of dwelling while
bridging a connection to public spaces for a unique urban lifestyle.
gmoruzzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11850739064477665754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7550645556887732968.post-30442962332862454342012-01-19T14:23:00.000-08:002012-01-19T14:24:09.705-08:00DIY Urbanism: Public Art (Graffiti and Murals)

By: Shelby Upton, Kyle Kurokawa, and Sara Hakanson

Do-it-yourself urbanism has become a way to leave ones own mark on
society. Designers and artists have had to deal with the possibility of their work being altered by consumers and others who use the space. This has been done, not only in an artistic sense, but also in such a way that it has been classified as vandalism. To some, there is a fine line between “vandalism” (that which is not aesthetically pleasing) and “art”.

As we explored areas around the U-District, we discovered numerous examples of public art, or graffiti, that are examples of do-it-yourself urbanism. Whether in a park, on the wall of a business, or next to a busy road, open spaces everywhere have been covered with graffiti and murals of many styles and varying levels of artistic abilities. Each of these are examples of how individuals are taking the initiative to urbanize their surroundings and make them more interesting and beautiful.

Our first examples are taken from the outside walls of businesses. The Mac Store in the U-District (9th Ave. & 45th St.) has several images painted on its back wall, some of which have been altered with other graffiti. This makes the building more interesting and gives those who pass by something to admire. The next photo is a mural called “Larva Live” depicting a bug band (found on the south alley wall of the Trading Musician at NE Ravenna Blvd. and Roosevelt Way NE). This was painted in 2003 by local artist Scott Summers who has been painting murals professionally for more than 20 years[1].

The 4th and 5th photos were taken on the north side of the University Bridge in the U-District. These paintings have been changed and altered over time, but they have an organic, almost natural growing feeling which could represent the growth of a city, possibly into urbanization.

The next examples were taken at Cowen Park (5849 15th Ave. NE) and at “Tubs” (47th St. & 50th St.). The Cowen Park murals have been vandalized with graffiti but are still clear examples of do-it-yourself urbanism. “Tubs” is a business that was shut down in 2007 and the owners have decided to allow graffiti artists to cover the building. The owner has no plans to clean it up and enjoys allowing artists to express themselves[2].

Walking around downtown Seattle, we investigated what an
urban city really meant to us. Although we initially thought of highrise
buildings and large groups of people hurriedly walking along the sidewalk, we looked
closer at the whole picture of urbanism and the unplanned city. We went downtown
to Pike Place Public Market and observed all the action of everyday life that
seems to be part of a larger spectacle.

The numerous street shows demonstrate clever interactions between
people and city. The informality of the entertainment attracts the attention of
both tourists and locals that circulate with in this area. These events are
temporary, transforming simple sidewalks to micro-urban theaters. This type of
informal urbanism is well appreciated in places like the Public Market in
downtown Seattle.

The multiple layers of informal space change the appearance
of the area according to the activity of the moment, constantly in flux and in tune
with the pulse of the city. Magicians, singers and comedians captivated
audiences and in turn realized economic niches for themselves by receiving
donations from observers. Street entertainment is a clear example of everyday urbanism-
a critical component of city fabric.

The Dodgeballers used one of the two tennis courts available in the park, and brought their own balls to play twice a week. Around the same time, Seattle Bike Polo began meeting in the same place, and tennis players began complaining to the Parks Department that the courts were being destroyed and tennis players could no longer use them. The Dodgeball Crew moved for a short time to a local community center, but quickly realized that the vibrant spirit of dodgeball came from the eclectic group of ever changing people and the convienence of Cal Anderson Park. Despite being told by the Parks Department that they were not allowed to play in the tennis courts and orders from the Seattle Police Department that any dodgeball activities seen by officers must be immediately stopped, the games continued twice a week for 2 more years.

The Seattle Street Dodgeball group became friends with the local police, encouraged kids to play dodgeball instead of drinking or drugs, and they provided a welcoming space to meet neighbors and friends for free on Capitol Hill. One
of the things that makes the city of Seattle distinct is the fact that
it is made up of so many different intimate neighborhoods. Even though
it is the 15th largest population center in the U.S. These population
centers in the U.S are usually characterized by, isolated relationships,
Urban monotony, sprawl, and so on. The uniqueness here in Seattle can
be derived from its perfect marriage of the individual and intimate
neighborhoods with its urban downtown core and industrious suburban
areas.

This
phenomenon does not just happen out of thin air. The residents here
take pride in their neighborhood communities. Seattle has its
Neighborhood Matching Fund program which incentivize the neighborhood
groups to invest in there own neighborhood. The city does this by
offering to match every dollar that the neighbors put into their
projects. This includes services as well, so if the neighborhood has a
gardener living in it, and he or she decides to donate their skills as a
gardener the city will match every hour they put in with the equivalent
in hourly wages. According to the department’s statement, since 1988,
there were more than 3800 voluntary projects within Seattle encouraging
more community bonding.

murals where done by a group known as City Repair, “Bubbles the Turtle”
and “The Ladybug” are street murals and are representing the
Wallingford neighborhood community. “Bubbles the Turtle” was designed
and drawn at the intersection of Interlake Avenue North and North 41st
Street by Rachel Marcotte. And “The Ladybug” is located at North 49th
Street and Burke Avenue North and designed by Eric Higbee in 2004. To
ensure the murals remain, there are annual painting parties were
neighbors get together and touch up the murals. These murals bring
neighbors together for bonding, and furthers the distinct neighborhoods
idea that Seattle keeps so well.

Where once proud neighborhoods stood, never ending overlap of grey pavement and run down commerce can be found fight to encroach. Conformity and unconsciousness has lead to a disconnected citizen body, where community is not felt and responsibility is not taken. However In the University District one of Seattle’s busiest neighborhoods community members have taken a stand to characterize and personalize their urban space implementing the simple notion of color and grandeur to scream out against the dull gray landscape. In locations around the neighborhood such as on University and 41st or 15th and 8th, artists have gifted the community with gigantic murals of color. These statements are not only beautifully striking in their artistic presence, but have become landmarks giving the University District beautiful places of interests and reorganization. With a personality and places of reference the University District does not have to be a place know for weary student zombies march to lectures or bums asking for money, but a peaceful place of color and creation, where the artistic and concerned citizen is just a strong as the academic community.

View DIY Urbanism in a larger map

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7550645556887732968.post-52330703574345792622012-01-19T11:22:00.000-08:002012-01-19T11:55:54.146-08:00Socioeconomic Views of Urban P-Patch Gardens, Mike S. and Kevin B.

Our photo diary presents personalized aspects of several P-Patch community gardens in Seattle. We took photos at the Beacon Hill, Bradner, Immaculate, Judkins and Belltown gardens on the morning of Thursday, January 12, 2012. Documenting a spectrum of “do-it-yourself” elements that we observed, we noticed the range of socio-economic influences on the garden elements. The gamut included homemade compost walls from shelving materials, plastic bottle hot-houses, intricate mosaic and tiling, and anonymous homeless person’s detritus. We were struck by the creativity and personality that communities and individuals display in the urban P-Patch movement. Some of the personalization is decorative while others are functional. These elements contribute to everyday urban life and fabric, helping relate and reveal our relationships to food in an urban context.

As a whole, the activities and spaces of P-Patches are sanctioned and planned. We started to question if unplanned spaces is a required component of “do-it-yourself urbanism”. As Margaret Crawford said in Everyday Urbanism, “Everyday space stands in contrast to carefully planned, officially designated, and often underused spaces of public use.” Although guerrilla gardening on vacant property might be more traditional DIY urbanism, the smaller details of the p-patches certainly show the DIY spirit of the people using the spaces. We propose that even within government sanctioned spaces, communities and individuals can create their own spaces using what resources they have.

Using the details we photographed, it is possible to gather an impression of the socioeconomic background of the neighborhood using the gardens. Belltown, full of young money, has solar panels and elaborate decorative mosaics and is also used by the poor of the downtown area as a home or hangout spot (among the items left behind were two pairs of pants, body lotion, and small bottles of alcohol). On the less moneyed side of the spectrum, plastic bottles and refrigerator shelving are used as gardening tools. The story of the neighborhoods begins to emerge through the fine details of the gardens, and we were successful in capturing the homemade and eclectic nature infused in our urban P-Patch gardens.

View Select Seattle P-Patch Gardens in a larger mapUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7550645556887732968.post-40418353735264255082012-01-19T02:51:00.000-08:002012-01-19T03:41:35.516-08:00URBAN PHOTO DIARY: Outdoor SpaceBy Jun Wu

Walking around the southwest corner of Downtown Seattle, I am attracted by a barrack building that is covered with green parthenocissus. When I walk closely, there is a big open place in front of the building, scattered with sets of tables and chairs with umbrellas. The place is called the Grant Central Arcade, a formal privately owned public place, possibly by the business owners of the building. The tables and chairs are removable that can be moved in and out the building between days and nighst. Even though it is privately owned space, the arcade is not enclosed with any type of barriers. There is even a supersize chess sitting in the middle of the arcade that is free for everyone to access just like the rest of the arcade. If it is not because of the cold and windy winter day, there must be a big crowd of people gathering around.

When it comes to define city urbanism. I want to think of it as the way of life of the people. How is the design of the city affluence the behaviors of its dwellers and on the other side, how is the behavior of the dwellers shape the image of the city. The arcade is owned by dwellers who cares about the others. Contributing privately owned equipments to provide the public with convenience and entertainments. I want to call it the spirit of Seattle.

I also pictured some other private owned cafes and bars that occupy space on the public sidewalk. Almost all of them has some kind of fancy fences around them and it is obvious that they are there to serve their customers only. This is not a criticism. It is very common among private own business. I just feel like they really make the Grant Central Arcade stands out in contract.

When light bathes the city during the day, space and information are overexposed. At night, on the other hand, the spatial form of the city is subjugated to experience, to a highly distilled, shifting balance between stillness and action. Certain areas are hubs of activity, intensified by their proximity to the silent and deserted streets that surround them. Our photographs investigate the juxtapositions that occur only at night, focusing on the dynamic interplay between people, light, and the physical environment.

Here everything becomes an artistic medium for human presence, resulting in temporal imagery such as textured footprints on snow or the paintings made by traffic lights reflecting on wet pavement. We sought to exploit these facets of DIY urbanism in a catalog of “tactical” expressions, to borrow the term of Michel de Certeau. These instants were captured between 7 and 10 pm on Capitol Hill, in Fremont, and on the UW campus. In each case we were struck by the strength of the connection between the emotional and social character of the night and its visual expression.

Here are our locations:

Betsy Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01362414827864173559noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7550645556887732968.post-15161595975127504092012-01-18T19:35:00.000-08:002012-01-18T21:19:12.423-08:00DIY Diary: Intersections of Community, Art & Culture
In
1996 co-founders Mark Lakeman, Eva Rose Miller, and Charla Chamberlain gave
birth to Portland’s City Repair Project, a grass roots movement towards
bringing the “public” back to public streets.
Over the years numerous intersections have been transformed throughout
Portland by the average individual joining forces with others within the
community to create street murals, community bulletin boards, mini-cafes, etc. Inspired, in 2005 Seattle citizens began to
engage in activating their own neighborhood streetscapes by turning ordinary
intersections into brightly painted gathering spaces.

reclamation of public space, known as Intersection Repair strives to promote localization
of culture, economy, and decision-making.
Furthermore, this act of place making cultivates the construction of
safe, strong, and welcoming communities, as well as the creation of meaningful
spaces that will serve the specific needs of each individual neighborhood.

Traditionally,
neighbors within communities keep to themselves, content within the confines of
their property lines, but Intersection Repair fosters the development of
community cooperation and interaction. Neighbors get to know one another as
they work side-by-side to create a unique expression of the community. The physical act of transforming these
streets is just as important as the finished project – the journey is just as
important as the arrival. For without
the support of the community such projects do not exist. Some paintings have
not survived the years [i.e. Squire Park in the Central District] due to a lack
of citizen commitment and/or new community dynamics.

Questions
arise regarding the actual safety of Intersection Repair murals in terms of
distractions for drivers, but for the majority this movement has empowered
citizens to take ownership of their communities, transforming ideals regarding
the street and how it can be used.
Communities across the United States have adopted City Repair methods to
infuse life and human connectivity back into communities. After all, the city is for the people -
citizens should claim it and morph it, not accept it.

The Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) was founded in 1980 in order to build a community within the Phinney and Greenwood neighborhoods in Seattle1. It is located at 6532 Phinney Avenue North. The PNA provides many opportunities for community members to meet and collaborate together to build a strong neighborhood. To create a cohesive space for the community, all sectors of the community must be considered. Often children are left out in this process. However, within the Phinney Neighborhood Center, one can easily see that children have been considered as valuable community members.

The site was visited in on January 7th. On the site, there are two PNA buildings; the main PNA center on the top slope, and the lower PNA center where the preschool and playground are located. (As shown in Site Map above) A set of pedestrian stairs is located in between the two buildings. The design of the stairs illustrate children’s involvement – the mosaics which cover the stairs are painted by children in the neighborhood (Slide show, photo 5 and 6). By doing so, that children collaborate and articulate beauty into the neighborhood. On the side, there are two different playgrounds located on the opposite views in front of the Phinney Neighborhood preschool: one built on the slope with slides for the older kids (Slide show, Photo 4) and one with boundary shields providing toys for younger kids (Slide show, Photo 3).

The playgrounds show that children are considered in the design of the neighborhood center. These are the space for the children. On the other hand, by painting the mosaics on the stairs, the children also actively involved in the creation of community space. The PNA site is essentially a space designed for the children and by the children.

Waiting lists for neighborhood P-Patches have ranged from 1-7 years forcing urban dwellers with limited access to fertile ground to take measures into their own hands.

<span style="font-family: "Gill Sans Light";">Within only a 10-block radius on the east side of the Capitol Hill neighborhood a broad variety of space appropriation (public, private and quasi-private) is taking place to accommodate citizens’ growing enthusiasm. On a few wintry January days, do-it-yourself edible urbanism is surprisingly evident despite the season and snow. Colorful kale, chard and beets peek out of lumpy piles of snow in traffic claming circles and chickens announce their daily progeny in alleyways.

<span style="font-family: "Gill Sans Light";">While these growing spaces are distinctly unique in design and come in a wide range of scales they appear to share certain characteristics that I propose are qualities of most do-it-yourself urbanism(s). Each space has a public quality to it even if it is actually on private property. All of them challenge the spatial constraints that are presented in dense urban spaces and in most cases challenge potential legal constraints. Regardless of size, they are highly visible from the street and therefore invite public engagement. Their placement and design all have invitational qualities to get others involved (with or without owners’ permission), for example to have a snack, to share in the labor, or to replicate the strategy at one’s own dwelling because, indeed, they prove they are easily DIY.

Tent City 4 (TC4) is a self-organized community of people who have made
homes out of a neighborhood of tents. Between 70 and 80 women, men, and couples
form this tight community, some staying for a few days and some on and off for
years. The circumstances that bring them to TC4 vary - from having just lost a
job to shouldering the burden of medical or child support debt to losing a
home. LeAnn, our resident tour guide, had been living there for just over a
month. It was her first homeless experience after having separated from her
husband who suffered from a severe mental disorder. She shared that, “living here
has been the most safe I’ve ever felt.” TC4’s strict policies screen residents
for criminal records, residents work shifts to provide 24-hour security, and a
front entrance monitors all that come in and out. Also, because much is
required of TC4 residents (including mandatory weekly community meetings and
volunteering for “community credits” and security shifts) those that end up
staying are a self-selected bunch of committed residents.

TC4 also gets the support of partners. The host church, currently The
Community Church of Issaquah, donates space and electricity for 90 days, after
which time TC4 must relocate to another site (on January 21st it will move to
Holy Spirit Lutheran Church of Kirkland). Many of the tents are donated by the nonprofit
SHARE/WHEEL. Every night different church and community organizations provide a
hot meal and they receive donations of food and clothing/supplies.

On
the Thursday afternoon of our visit we found the tents and surrounding areas
incredibly clean, quiet, and organized. Several communal areas included a
kitchen, a donated supply tent, Porta Potty restrooms, a hot shower, a laundry
room, and an area for communal meals with a cable television and computer with
Internet access. It was clear that, despite its temporary structures, this was
a vibrant and well-functioning community. What is more, it is one that - as
Leanne explained to us - had changed the lives of several of its residents.
Some have left TC4 to start stable jobs, find permanent housing, or pursue
their education. Others have simply benefited from having a safe place to sleep
and settle. They invite anyone interested to visit their community, take a
tour, and find out what TC4 is all about first-hand.

<u1:p></u1:p>

The term “homeless encampment” is used to describe a
multiplicity of living situations, its scope covering individual encampments,
complex community or village encampments, and everything in between. This photo
diary includes images from two Seattle encampments on opposite ends of this
spectrum – one community encampment, Nickelsville, a South Seattle shantytown
assembled on City-owned property and one solitary shelter encampment on
the grassy median between I-5 North and NE 45th Street.

Nickelsville currently exists on an historic wetland, now
filled with dredge material from the Duwamish River and 'capped' with clean
material. Shelters are on pallets and walkways and low areas are being raised
with arborist woodchips. Currently a semi-permanent community awaiting
City sanction, some community leaders in Nickelsville aspire to a 10 year
vision and accommodations for up to 300 residents.

The solitary encampment we photographed is composed of a
single tent and a chair. The tent faces toward the busy freeway--perhaps an
attempt at privacy from exiting cars. The three trees nearest the tent serve as
a place for drying blankets, bike storage and campsite delineation.

Advantages and challenges accompany both living in solitary
camps and in community encampments. While solitary living offers liberty from
group rules and group structure, it comes with the increased dangers of
physical abuse, theft, and peer pressure. And while living in a larger
community means access to a larger supply of resources (food, blankets, tents,
tarps, etc) and a relatively extensive support system, the success of the
community is dependent upon extensive organizational efforts, and necessitates
adherence to a strict list of rules. Nickelsville now takes donations online to
pay for utilities such as Honey Bucket rentals and waste disposal.

our DIY urbanism photo-diary we explored the two-block segment of the Pike-Pine corridor directly East of Broadway. This is an area set up best for foot traffic, with limited parking and many street-level businesses including retail, restaurants, bars and clubs (as well as street-food vendors that appear on the sidewalk after dark). The area is also bordered by Cal Anderson Park, so that between night and day attractions it is almost always an active, vibrant area. Though none of the artifacts we found were directly related to each other, the proliferation of spaces (small and large) where individuals had decorated this neighborhood created a definite identity for the community. In addition to more long-term art projects, the unusually snowy weather at the time of our walk through the area encouraged interaction in the environment, and allowed for extremely temporary enactments of DIY public art.

Urbanism is seen as the way of life of the people that inhabit cities. Thus we understood DIY urbanism to being how people informally make the city even more of their own. The City Beautiful Movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries attempted to take beautify the city through planning. In a sense, the images we captured were a DIY City Beautiful; people taking what could be lifeless spaces, and making them so much more.

We found that this is especially the case in areas where people walk. According to an article written by Natalie Swaby for King 5 News onSeptember 8, 2011, the trend was begun by Seattle resident Todd Vogel. Vogel had moved into an office off Nord Alleyjust east of 1st Avenue South, between South Main and South Jacksonstreets near Occidental Park in one of Seattle’s more sketchy areas. A neighbor, Jack Bennetto, was quoted inSwaby’s article as saying, “There were a lot of people that would come here touse it as a bathroom or for drugs or prostitution.” Vogel was quoted in the article as saying, “…people who do unhealthy things don’t want to be around people who do healthythings.” So Vogel decided to institutechange. He placed a table, which he boughtoff Craigslist for $26, in the alley and encouraged neighbors to put out plantsand flowers on their balconies. Hecontacted the city and arranged for trash to be picked up daily so the largedumpsters could be removed. He alsoapplied for grants and gathered donations. Vogel is quoted in a blog by Gabriel Campanario of the Seattle Times assaying, “We started respecting the space and people started to respectit.” Now Nord Alley is the venue formonthly happenings, such as evening jazz performances or pet adoption events, and has sparked a trend.

We visited Nord Alley on arecent cold, but dry, January day. Therewere a few trash bags sitting out, presumably waiting for the daily garbagecollection. There was also a deliveryvan blocking the south entrance. NordAlley did have potted plants, a bird feeder, and a beautiful sculpture mountedon the building’s side above our heads. Despite the presence of a transient population in Occidental Park, wefelt comfortable walking through this alley. Surly this is a great trend for the city!

Sources:
Campanario, Gabriel. “Downtown alley leaves dark days behind, welcomes pedestrians.” http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seattlesketcher/2011184707_green_alleys.html
Feb. 24, 2011.

Toole,Daniel. “Tight Urbanism: Alley Architecturein the US, Australia, and Japan” http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2319461

Swaby,Natalie. “DowntownSeattle alleys undergoing transformations.”
http://www.king5.com/news/cities/seattle/Downtown-Seattle-alleys-undergoing-transformations-129464393.html
September 8, 2011.

All photos by Caitlin Lockhart.

<a href="http://www.blogger.com/<iframe%20width=%22425%22%20height=%22350%22%20frameborder=%220%22%20scrolling=%22no%22%20marginheight=%220%22%20marginwidth=%220%22%20src=%22http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=206597081587897719603.0004b6c21187b89871a89&ie=UTF8&t=h&vpsrc=1&ll=47.599696,-122.333536&spn=0,0&output=embed%22>
View%20<a%20href=%22http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=206597081587897719603.0004b6c21187b89871a89&ie=UTF8&t=h&vpsrc=1&ll=47.599696,-122.333536&spn=0,0&source=embed%22%20style=%22color:#0000FF;text-align:left">Nord Alley in a larger map">
View Nord Alley in a larger map
AWilliamsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12706347737347692700noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7550645556887732968.post-90885244633257972732012-01-16T17:19:00.000-08:002012-01-16T17:19:17.459-08:00Burke Gilman Volunteer Parties<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Alyse Wright and Michelle Latham

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our photo diary presents the work of volunteers on the Burke Gilman Trail to remove invasive plants and restore a native forest environment within Seattle. We documented a section of the trail between 40th Ave NE and NE 70th st on January 12th, 2012 at noon. In this section of trail, we observed areas of recent volunteer led clearing and replanting, marked by wood chip mulch and flags at each new plant. We also saw innumerable bird and bat houses which had been built and hung by volunteers, and a staircase built by a boyscout troop. Also installed were informative signs listing volunteer events, interpretive signs providing names and descriptions of plants, and signs advertising the Green Seattle Partnership.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This partnership is the organization which supports the Friends of Burke Gilman volunteer group with the help of the City of Seattle and Forterra, and the signs were intended to help recruit more volunteers to work on the trail. The desire for volunteers is great because the Burke Gilman trail is an important recreation and transportation feature of North Seattle. As we walked along the trail we observed many users enjoying it, including runners, walkers, cyclists, people walking their dogs, squirrels, and birds. The Do-It-Yourself attitude of the volunteers who are working on the trail is helping to improve the trail experience for all its users, and creating a space for urban dwellers to "get away" and experience "nature." This is especially important for the city’s resident and migratory wildlife, but is also beneficial to the homeowners adjacent to the greenbelt the trail creates.

The Pike Place market in down town Seattle is a rich cultural shopping destination. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Seattle because it offers different cultural, handmade and artisanal foods and gifts, a lot of which are local to Washington. As you walk through the market the smells, sounds, and colors swirl around you in a very active urban environment. Vendors set up their fascinating wares in rows in a long tent that eventually extends outside the tent. Here in the market you will find things you can’t find in your everyday grocery store, and they range from expensive truffles to handmade clothing and crafts.

Aside from the commercial aspect of the market, there are musicians and artists who come to the market to perform. Every few blocks a musician stands, and adds their music to the bustle of the market, setting a moody ambience in the space. They perform to make a living for themselves, freely entertaining the public while subtly asking for donations. Without the musicians the market wouldn’t be the same.

It is people who largely activate the market life, people who come from everywhere to walk through the market and experience the urban culture. The market is predominantly a pedestrian space and is best experienced by busing or biking there. We didn’t see any bike racks walking through the market but we found people chained their bikes onto fences and other objects to secure them.

Another part of the urban environment at the market is that there are privately owned plazas near the market. These plazas put up warning signs to people that trespassing and loitering in the plaza is not allowed. The privately owned plazas are dramatically different from the market, in that they are empty concrete landscapes with geometrically placed planters. These empty hard scape plazas remind us of other aspects of urbanism, and how the private sector largely controls public space.

The Pike Place market is a cultural center of urbanism, where artists, craftsmen, and musicians come together to activate an urban space. The density and nature all these people coming together really define what we think is an urban environment.BlaseIntenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02180241932730203630noreply@blogger.com01st Ave, class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> Marginal Way skatepark is being built by skateboarders, for skateboarders. The project began in 2004 with a group of people identifying an underutilized piece of public property that was previously used as a transient campground and garbage dump. After years of illegally pouring concrete to create skateable terrain, Marginal Way is now a legal skatepark that is completely built and maintained by local skateboarders. It has since been turned into a registered non-profit corporation.

Marginal Way is a unique facility for several reasons. First of all, the park can be used year round. The day of the site visit, there were two inches of fresh snow on the ground. The park was dry because it was built under a highway ramp. Marginal Way is likely the only public place that can be skated that day. Next, because the park was built by those who use it, the specific shapes and arrangement of the concrete forms are perfect for skateboarding; in contrast to many parks built by non-skateboarding contractors who inevitable get it wrong. Also, the design of the park is flexible- if a feature is not working well it can be torn out and something else built instead. Therefore, it functions as a laboratory for skatepark design.

Marginal Way functions as a gathering place for youth and adults who share the love of skateboarding and skatepark design. However, it is not without its share problems including security, theft, drug use, and vandalism. Self-funded and self-policed, this facility is an excellent example of DIY Urbanism.

Precedents

Burnside, Portland Oregon

Channel Street, San Pedro, California

Washington Street, San Diego California

Pagshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755839553797161610noreply@blogger.com0
